Although Nuremberg is the second largest city in Bavaria, and fourteenth largest in Germany, the cozy cobblestone streets and layered medieval architecture has the sense of a picturesque village.

Last weekend, Sven and I spent a few days exploring Nuremberg’s old town while getting lost in the charm of it all. The walled historic center, which is bisected by the River Pegnitz, is filled with quaint half-timbered houses contrasted by dramatic Gothic-era churches and medieval fortifications. Although the city is most famed for its idyllic Christmas Markets at Hauptmarkt, I found that the Autumn colors complimented the city’s rusty sandstone buildings just right.

Be sure to pay a visit to the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg which borders the northern edge of the wall and offers sweeping views of the city beyond. I would also recommend having a peek inside the Church of St. Sebaldus, which stands in front of Nuremberg’s City Hall. The interior of this church has an ambiance that is somehow both imposing and calming – with magnificent stone columns that seemingly stretch to the heavens. There are many more interesting sites to explore in the city, so I encourage you to go discover Nuremberg for yourself.

During our visit, we stayed at the Melter Hotel & Apartments – a comfortable and sleek design hotel in the heart of Nuremberg (hosted visit).
