An expression of cleverness and craft, the JG Folding Stool by Jørgen Gammelgaard has earned a well-deserved place amongst Fredericia’s agelessly modern classics.
[AD] A reintroduction of Gammelgaard’s work from 1970, the JG Folding Stool is yet another testament of Fredericia’s commitment to giving archival designs the chance they deserve to carry on today. Although seemingly simple, it’s a masterpiece of both artistry and engineering — defined by striking ribbon-like lines and a beautiful combination of materials such as buffed steel, canvas, and leather.
Last year, Fredericia brought this Danish icon back into production and into the hearts of collectors like myself. When it came to our home, I opted for the natural canvas option since I loved the contrast between the satin metal finish and textural woven fabric. There’s also a beautiful contrast to be found between the warmth and coolness of these materials too, both which seamlessly compliment the understated mix of wood tones, stone, and natural textiles we own.
I have to admit that I struggled to find the perfect place for this stool in our home because it looks and functions so nicely everywhere — even when folded away, tucked in a corner, or leaned against the wall. Since the JG Stool moved into our flat this spring, it’s found function at the foot of our bed, as adjunct seating when hosting friends, and has even acted as a side table. The trick is to create a more leveled surface by adding a stack of books. I’m looking forward to seeing how the materials patina in the years to come, telling the story of its many functions and treasured place in my own design archives. Scroll below for a few examples…
