When it comes to sourcing investment pieces for our home, AndLight has become my go-to destination for classic and contemporary designs alike. The Little Petra lounge by &Tradition is the newest addition to our home sourced from AndLight. So in honor of its arrival, I’m sharing a few details about the design and why I see it as an absolute forever piece.

[ad] Designed by Viggio Boesen in 1938, the Little Petra lounge chair has become a well-known classic loved by many for its beautiful curves and inviting proportions. Boesem, who had great influence on the Danish funkis style of the 1930s and 1940s, created the design with absolute comfort and simplicity in mind. Little Petra was quick to capture the hearts of many, but only a few pieces were ever produced since the lounge was made-to-order for a small amount of private customers. Over the decades, these original chairs became highly sought-after due to their limited nature, fetching high prices at auction from Scandinavian design enthusiasts eager to own a part of Boesen’s legacy.

In 2018 however, Danish design house &Tradition brought the chair back to production in celebration of its 80th anniversary. Thanks to its surprisingly small form, Little Petra is able to fit all kinds of spaces, making it incredibly versatile and the perfect accent chair for almost any room. But don’t let its petite size cause you to underestimate its comfort. The open embrace of the chair can accommodate a multitude of seating positions, inviting you to curl up and get cozy for hours.

Although now available in several textiles, a Little Petra upholstered in 100% Australian sheepskin is perhaps the most classic and lux variant of all. The lush and tactile shearling in combination with the chair’s soft curvatures gives this design a wonderful sheep-like presence which exudes comfort, while the elegant lines of its wooden legs and sculptural winged back add to its undeniable timelessness.

Tips For Choosing Investment Pieces

I’m not at all of the belief that every design in your home should come from the same style-period or share the same aesthetics. In fact, I find that the true magic happens when there’s a bit of juxtaposition. When choosing an investment piece however, it’s smart to employ a bit of strategy since the key to building long-term harmony in a space can be found through thoughtful curation.

When searching for a new design, I always look for pieces that fit well into the overall context of our home… not just a single room. Especially when choosing flexible pieces such as lounge chairs, accent tables, or lighting, it’s important to consider the versatility of the design and how it combines with the pieces you currently own, as well as any other designs you might be contemplating for the future.

Ask yourself these questions: Can I use the design in multiple areas of my home? Does the piece mix nicely with the majority of what I already own (or hope to)? Does the design fit well into the long-term vision for how I want to live in terms of function? Will the piece hold its value and be worth passing on or selling later on? If the answer is yes to all of these questions, then chances are you’ve found a piece that’s well worth the investment. For me, the Little Petra lounge absolutely checks all these boxes.

Envisioning A Long-Term Interior

Creating a digital vision-board is another great way to determine if a design is right for your interior. Since moving into our current flat, I’ve kept a vision-board for each room — a simple working document that helps me organize my thoughts and quickly proof-of-concept my ideas as I’m considering changes. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but I still highly recommend creating some form of digital collage for each room in your home, especially if you’re like me and enjoy the process of mindfully curating your interior one design at a time. Doing so will also help you avoid impulse buys and provide more clarity in your long-term concept.

Before I come to any decisions, I always give the design-in-question a bit of time to live on my home vision-boards… just to be sure I’m completely convinced it’s the right fit. However, In the case of the Little Petra lounge, I was quite instantly aware that this design was perfect. The piece embodies everything I appreciate in a lounge — genuine comfort, aesthetics which transcend trends, a rich Scandinavian heritage, and craftsmanship that will stand the test of time. It’s a design I can see myself cherishing for the rest of my life since I know I’ll always have a place for it thanks to its petite footprint, timeless style, and neutral materials.

In the images below, you can see the many ways I’ve styled the Little Petra lounge in different areas of our home. It’s currently found a more permanent place in our living room, but I love just how well it pairs in the other rooms of our flat too. The texture of the shearling adds a layer of warmth and comfort to each space, creating a striking balance between our sparsely decorated surfaces and serene white walls. And its gorgeous curvatures compliment the many other sculptural forms I’ve brought into our home — be it another mid-century classic, modernist icon, or element with contemporary flair.
