Gubi ~ Design for Characterful Spaces

Gubi Copenhagen Showroom

Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of spending a morning with one of my all-time favorite Copenhagen based brands, Gubi. If you’re familiar with the Danish interior’s scene, then this design giant is already well on your radar. But today I want to take some time to explore a few of the latest designs that have joined Gubi’s unique array of novelties and classics.

In the last years, Gubi has undoubtedly taken a ‘more-is-more’ approach when it comes to expanding their portfolio. Nevertheless, the brand has an undeniable hand for bringing forward icon after icon. While some of these designs are entirely new developments, Gubi also has reached into the archives, bringing to life designs from years past. One of their most recent reintroductions is the Basket Collection designed by Joe Colombo during the 1960s. The artistry required to create the hand-woven rattan base sets the Basket Collection apart from any other of its kind, both today and at the time of the design’s original conception. And different from many of Mr. Colombo’s designs, the Basket Collection shows an appreciation for softness thanks to its generous curves, organic form, and natural materials.

Another reintroduction from the past which I’m completely smitten with is the Tropique Collection designed by Mathieu Matégot. Originally from the 1950s, this series includes dining chairs and tables intended for outdoor use. Unmistakably French in influence, Mathieu’s playful intertwining of furniture and fashion is evident throughout the tailoring of these pieces — particularly the Tropique Dining Chair and their fringe-trimmed armrests. In most cases, I tend to favor designs which avoid embellishment simply for the sake of embellishment, but in the case of the Tropique Chair I can fully subscribe. Gubi’s move to the outdoors doesn’t end here however. Many of their known classics have also been adapted for al fresco living, including the Pacha Lounge, C and F Chair, Atmosfera Dining Table, and more.

When it comes to entirely new designs, Gubi has introduced some absolute beauties as of late. Amongst those is the Doric Coffee Table Collection by Danish-Italian duo GamFratesi. Carved from natural stone, the materiality of these tables is certainly an aspect which gives them their special appeal, but I can’t go on without mentioning the sculptural elegance of their form. Although simple, the carved leg detail gives the design a timeless modernity reminiscent of architecture in both past and present times. In the images below, you can experience a few moments from Gubi’s Copenhagen showroom through my eyes. You’ll also be able to spy a few other recently introduced designs such as the all-new wood version of the Beetle Chair in stunning 3D veneer.
