A Fresh Start In Munich

After several weeks of radio silence here on RG Daily, I’m finally ready to share the exciting news! Life has been overwhelmingly busy and so much has changed since my last update.

So here’s the big news: Sven and I moved to Munich! Was this something we had planned on doing? No, not at all… but it’s been an amazing new chapter in our life that’s already off to a beautiful start. So, why exactly did we uproot our lives in Berlin to be in the heart of Bavaria? Towards the end of April, Sven’s work asked if he would be willing to relocate to Munich to head a new department. Originally, they asked him if he would be able to start the position at the beginning of May, but we both agreed that planning a relocation in a week-and-a-half was out of the question. So the official start date for his new job was set for the beginning of June, and we got busy getting everything prepare and in order. Organizing all the details, finding a new apartment, and finding tenants for our Berlin flat became a part-time-job, and so I decided to press pause on my blog articles until life calmed down again.

Considering how quickly the change came about, I’ve felt incredibly good along the way. It was an intense but smooth transition. We moved out of our Berlin flat and across country into our new Munich apartment on the same day, May 31st. Since then, we’ve been settling in while taking the time to enjoy our new surroundings. Moving away so suddenly from my friends in Berlin and the home we had built there was emotional for me, but I’m already feeling very comfortable with our new life in the south. Summer is absolutely the best time to move, regardless of the destination, and we’ve been happily exploring our neighborhood, the banks of the Isar, the city, and the surrounding mountains and lakes. I was quite picky when it came to what we were looking for in an apartment. Thankfully we landed in a dreamy altbau full of historic architectural character and loads of charm. It’s as if the stars aligned for us!

Since sharing the news of our move on IG, many people have reached out to asked me how we found our Munich flat. Much like Berlin, finding an apartment in Munich can be an exhausting emotional roller-coaster. Since Sven and I were under such intense time pressure, we opted for hiring a broker agency called KLN to help us find a flat. I feel like it’s the best decision we made in this whole process, and the agency we went with truly delivered when it came to presenting us with options that ticked all the boxes on our ‘wish-list’. Because we were looking afar from Berlin, it would have also become wildly costly and time consuming to travel back and fourth between cities for flat viewings. Having the agency do the scouting for us made it all so much easier. So if you are searching for a flat and are short on time, I would highly recommend taking the agency route. The deal is that you only have to pay their fee if you actually take one of the apartments they present you, so there’s not much to lose if your broker turns up empty-handed in the end. I was extremely impressed by how quickly they found us our dream flat, and it was actually the only apartment I visited in Munich while we were searching.

I wanted to share all these updates to get you all up-to-speed with the big changes. I’m really excited to begin making our Munich flat into a calming home for Sven and I. It already feel so good! I have a lot of small projects to finish in the coming days (like sewing curtains, installing some storage, ect). Thankfully the apartment had already been renovated before we moved in (unlike our old flat in Berlin) but it still shares many of the beautiful turn-of-the-century features and soul that I’ve fallen in love with — dreamy cornicing, herringbone parkett, high ceilings, etched door handles, ect. Here are a few photos snapped from our first two weeks in Munich. I’m looking forward to sharing lots of new interior articles in the weeks ahead!

Xx Rebecca
