January Updates & Soft Tones

    January 18, 2021
    Beige/Neutral Inspo, January Aesthetic

Happy New Year! Although I’m a few weeks behind, I couldn’t start off my first blog post for 2021 without a congratulations. If you’re reading this, that means you made it through 2020, and that in-and-of-itself is reason enough to feel elated.

At the end of 2020, Sven and I took some time off to re-charge our batteries. With both of us in home office, we’ve developed a bad habit of falling into the work grind at all hours of the day. So, having some time to fully separate from our work and relax (even though we were still at home) felt so helpful and necessary.

This start into January has been unusually sedate too, but I’ve decided to take advantage of the circumstances by re-structuring my focus for the coming months. I’ll be scaling back a bit on my large design-projects for the time being because I’m on a mission to earn my German naturalization this year and need to dedicate a lot of time to studying. I just recently learned that I’ll be eligible to apply for my German citizenship in a few months, so I’m very motivated to work hard to pass the exams for both language and naturalization. Hopefully, I’ll be able to put in my application by summer.

In between studying, I’ll keep sharing articles and stories here on RG Daily. I also plan to dabble a bit more in sculpture too — a new hobby of mine that I picked up during our winter pause and instantly fell in love with. There’s something so soothing and cathartic about working with clay, and I’m excited to see where this new love takes me. Below are a few photos that I’ve snapped on my iPhone since January began. We’ve not had too many bright days here in Berlin, so the feeling at home has been relaxed and muted. The defused daylight during these long winters always brings a special feeling of calm, but does an equally good job putting me in the mood for the next season — let’s hope its a sunny one.

    Xx, Rebecca

    Golden Essentials by Monarc Jewellery

    December 21, 2020
    Monarc Jewellery Editorial

Jewellery will forever be my favorite way to finish an outfit, and lately these beautiful earrings by Monarc Jewellery have been the first pieces I reach for when getting ready — whether I’m in the mood for something bold and feminine, or seeking something light and understated.

Based out of London, Monarc centers on luxury jewellery that is artful and timeless. The brand’s founder, Ella Drake, collaborates with a range of international designers, co-creating inspiring collections that are equally unique as they are beautiful. Each and every Monarc piece is exquisitely crafted by a master goldsmith, using responsibly sourced precious metals such as recycled gold and silver, and above-ground gemstones. The brand’s fine and demi-fine pieces are designed for daily wear, and made to last longer than a lifetime.

The Remie Huggies shown below are some of my favorite earrings for everyday wear and are part of Monarc’s most recent collection, UNUM. The elongated hoops are designed so that different charms can be added, making them incredibly versatile while still being simple and light enough to wear around-the-clock. When I’m in the mood for something a bit more opulent, the Hermione Hoops from Monarc’s Lolita Mas collection have become my go-to earrings. The classic silhouette is beautifully embellished by a rounded doughnut charm, giving these earrings a feeling that’s sculptural and glamourous. Like the finer Remie hoops, the Hermione hoops can also be worn bare without the doughnut charm. I’ve linked both of these below to discover.

Kalklitir ~ Creating Simple Paintings With Kalk

    December 18, 2020
    Kalklitir Chalk Paint

If you’re looking for a way to bring some warmth into your interior and would also enjoy a little diy project, let me suggest creating a simple painting using lime-based pigments by Kalklitir.

Now that we’ve lived in our flat for almost a year, I decided it was time to finally hang some art on the walls. But of course, I wanted to keep things really simple and warm, so I opted to create my own paintings using natural lime-based paint by Kalklitir. I’ve been seeing lots of interior applications using this type of kalk paint, and I love the beautiful depth and earthiness it adds to the room. But instead of cladding our walls in kalk, I opted to use this medium on canvas.

While I’ve always enjoyed painting, I’ll be the first to admit that I am no Picasso or fine artist. I simply enjoy the creative process (and hopefully the outcome) — creating a piece of artwork with Kalklitir is a very easy and relaxing project. I opted to make this painting using a neutral color called ‘Celadon Primo‘, but Kalklitir has a really wonderful assortment of pigments in their color range for you to explore.

Keep scrolling to see the painting process…

    Color Shown Here: Celadon Primo

Kalklitir Chalk Paint Kalklitir Chalk Paint Kalklitir Chalk Paint
    The Process Of Painting

For this particular painting, I wanted to create something very subtle with a small amount of structure for irregularity and depth. Before working with the Kalklitir paint, I had already added my structural foundation to the canvas using a combination of molding paste and acrylic paint. This was done a few days before, so that there was plenty of time for it to dry.

The next step was to mix the kalk paint, which comes in powder form and is easy enough to do using a hand-whisk. Since I didn’t use the full contents of the package, I simply weighed the powder and then added the appropriate amount of tap water based on the recipe provided on the label. For larger interior projects, I could imagine that it would be more convenient to mix the paint using an electric mixer since the recommended stir-time is ten minutes.

Once all was mixed, it was on to painting and this is super cathartic. I applied a total a three layers to the canvas while covering the edges as well, allowing the paint to dry between each layer. For this painting, I used the color “Celadon Primo” and applied the paint in horizontal layers that worked with the base structure on the canvas.

As Kalklitir says on their tips page, trusting the process is key. The color will dry many shades lighter in the end, and it’s impossible to make any judgements on the outcome until the paint is fully dry. But with this being the case, using Kalklitir on an art project turns the experience into a little journey.

    The Finished Results

As mentioned above, working with lime-based pigments is all about trusting the process. This being my first time using Kalklitir paint, I was a bit unsure of how it would turn out in the end. But I think that the result is really nice, with a natural characteristic and matte appearance that makes for a lovely and understated piece of artwork. Being a natural material, you’ll find interesting irregularities in each brushstroke, and the paint’s mineral properties allow you to create a stunning range of depth without needing to be a skilled painter.

After the painting had fully dried and hardened, I used a razor to trim away the bits of built-up paint that had accumulated around the back exterior edges of the canvas. I then sanded these areas down so that I could be sure no pigment would transfer to the wall after it was hung. I have plans to create a few more kalk paintings in the weeks to come, so I’ll share the finished outcome of those as well later on.

    Soft Holiday Vibes At Home

    December 16, 2020
    Simple Scandinavian Holiday Decor

More than the years before, I’ve really enjoyed the process of decorating our home for the holiday season by adding simple festive touches around the flat.

Now that we’re halfway through December, the Christmas countdown is very much on and we’re also very much in lockdown here in Berlin. It feels nice to have some holiday cheer around us, especially this year with the Christmas markets being closed and usual festive outings put on hold. But as always, we’ve found ways to make the most of these times while finding happiness in the simplicity of being cozy at home. This is the first year that Sven and I have opted for a proper Christmas tree, and I think it’s a tradition we’ll be keeping for the years ahead. I didn’t quite go “all out” with the decorations, but with lots of candles all around, arrangements of evergreen, and a little wreath fashioned out of leftover arrangements, I can say that it feels pretty festive here.

Beyond a few ornaments for the tree and some extra candles, I didn’t buy any new Christmas decorations this year. I really prefer to use the vases and candle holders we already own since I’m not a big fan of holiday themed decor that can only be used for one season. In the end, I love the subtle and soft holiday feeling you can achieve by not being too deliberate with festive-wear. For the first Advent, Sven’s mom sent us a little care package that included a beautiful candle holder with interlocking circles. I’ve been searching high and low, but I can’t find a similar style online to link. If I find one, I’ll add it later.

I’d really like to advocate for the idea of buying less holiday decorations (not only for Christmas, but for every holiday) and instead investing in timeless pieces that can be used all year round with different floral elements to set the tone. It’s easy to create a beautiful holiday-themed centerpiece or arrangement using your favorite platter or vase, and it gives you a chance to see the pieces you already own and love in a whole new light.

I hope you all are staying well and enjoy a really wonderful holiday time.

    Xx Rebecca

ASKET ~ Meaningful Gifts to Wear & Share

    December 8, 2020
    ASKET Timeless Winter Fashion

In the midst of the holidays, it’s easy to get caught up in all the buzzing commotion that prompts us to focus on giving and getting more. But instead of more, I’m here to focus on meaning with a small selection of gift ideas from ASKET — wonderfully cozy and beautifully timeless wool pieces that can be worn, shared, and loved for many years ahead.

With wool being one of nature’s greatest gifts to us, it only makes sense to gift someone dear to you an incredibly soft wool scarf or sweater. The Stockholm-based clothing brand’s thoughtful collection of Cashmere and Merino garments are ideal for anyone you might be shopping for this year, and are made to last a lifetime with a classic aesthetic that can be worn by anyone. As a couple, you can even go in together on one or two of ASKET’s cozy wardrobe essential to enjoy sharing during this cold winter, and the winters to come. Sven and I have both been loving the beige ASKET scarf so much, we’ve even had to “rock-scissors-paper” for it a few times!

Every decision ASKET makes is based on the long-term — a long-term approach to style when it comes to both design and quality, but more importantly, the long-term future of our planet. Their aim is to be a positive force of change within the fashion industry — an industry rife with over consumption fed by exploitive production practices that are damaging to both people and our planet. Their pursuit is to change this reality by re-instilling the value of clothing by encouraging a mentality centered on owning fewer but better pieces — pieces that are designed to be utterly timeless, and produced in a responsible way with enduring quality.

Instead of phasing in new products throughout every season, ASKET has one Permanent Collection which they’ve slowly and carefully developed since launching in 2015. Built on a “back-to-basics” approach, each garment in the ASKET Collection is thoughtfully refined to serve as a long-term wardrobe essential. They only introduce 3-4 garments a year which gives their team the ability and time to meticulously fine-tune each style while offering an expanded size range for better fitting clothing that feels custom-made.

With the exception of a few winter staples, their garments are totally seasonless and are designed to be worn year-round by practically anyone. While the brand technically focuses on menswear, I find many of their essentials to be perfectly genderless, and wonderfully flexible thanks to their depth of size variety. When it comes to transparency, ASKET operates on a full-disclosure model and goes into great detail about the nature of their suppliers and manufacturing, and the true cost of each piece they make. They even share journal-like recounts of their own development journeys, and the ups and downs they’ve faced along the way.

Nourishing Winter Skincare by Dr. Barbara Sturm

    December 8, 2020
Dr. Barbara Sturm Skincare, Winter Hydration

During these winter months, the cold temperatures and dry air always tend to leave our skin dehydrated and looking lackluster. Having a nourishing skincare routine is everything, especially when the harsh weather seems to be doing all it can to dull and dry our complexions. Lately, I’ve been using a combination of products by Dr. Barbara Sturm, each formulated to lock in moisture while healing, protecting, and combating the irritations and dryness that come along in the winter.

For most skincare and beauty lovers, Dr. Barbara Sturm needs no introduction. Her world-renown skincare products have earned much deserved recognition thanks to their scientifically formulated ingredients that deliver long-term nourishment and rich skin revitalization. With the Sturm Winter Routine I’ve been using, I’ve noticed a difference in my skin’s hydration and suppleness in just a matter of days. And in some cases, the difference has been almost instantaneous (as with the Hyaluronic Ampoules and Lip Balm ).

So, what exactly does ours skin need during the winter time? Hydration, and lots of it. But of course, not all skin hydrators are created equal, and it’s important to use products that are totally free of ingredients like alcohol, fragrance, mineral oils, and retinoids, which only irritate and dry the skin further. Especially during the winter, our skin’s natural moisture reservoirs dry out fast and are in regular need of replenishment. According to Dr. Sturm, the best way to do this is through a combination of Hyaluronic Acid and lipid-based moisturizers.

In her own words, Sturm describes Hyaluronic Acid as “the white T-shirt of skincare”. It’s a compound that already occurs naturally in our bodies, aiding in moisture retention on the cellular level. Unfortunately our bodies produce less of this wonder-compound as we get older, so making HA a part of your skincare routine is a key step for combating dryness and ageing. Dr. Sturm’s proprietary Hyaluronic Acid is highly concentrated and provides immediate intensive hydration, soaking deep into the skin’s moisture reservoirs. In order to seal in the hydration, each application of Hyaluronic Acid should be followed up with a layer of lipid-based moisturizer like Sturm’s Face Cream. This combination will help nourish and protect the skin, while preventing hydration loss through osmosis.

If you’re interested in giving Sturm products a try, I would highly recommend starting off with their Winter Kit. Based on my experience, this system truly has everything you’ll need to keep your skin soothed, hydrated, and nourished throughout the chilly weeks ahead. In addition to Sturm’s Hyaluronic Ampoules and Face Cream, I’ve also been absolutely loving the Enzyme Cleanser and Lip Balm. The cleanser, which comes in a powder form, works as an amazingly gentle exfoliant and has been so effective in lifting my dry, flaky skin away without causing any irritation. As for the Lip Balm, I simply have no words. My cracked lips were healed in just two days. I wish I would have taken a before and after photo, because the improvement has been really satisfying.

You should also browse through my favorite page on Sturm’s website, The Candy Shop, where you’ll find each product in mini sizes that are perfect for on-the-go refreshes or stocking-fillers for the upcoming holidays.

Now that December has officially begun, I’m here to kick-off the holiday season with my Design Collector’s Gift Guide — forever-pieces suited for any design enthusiast.

For this season of giving, I’ve teamed up with Nest Co UK to put together a curated selection of gift ideas centered on timeless design. If you have a collector on your shopping list this year, hopefully this guide will spark a few ideas. I’ve included many of my favorite sure-to-be-classics — items like vases, small lamps, and eye-catching occasional tables.

There’s an iconic piece in just about every price range, with gift ideas starting around €30. Some of these items are designs we already own and use daily, and some are still on my wish-list. However, all of these pieces are functional and beautifully timeless — pieces that will endure for many years ahead thanks to their sculptural aesthetics, simple detailing, and honest materiality.

Most of the items I’ve curated for this guide are from Nest’s “In Stock” selection, so you can be sure they will reach you in time for the holidays. However, some items might have longer fulfilment periods (since good things take time) so please keep this in mind when browsing — happy shopping, and happy holidays!

Flattered ~ Cozy Winter Boots & Slippers

    November 25, 2020
Flattered, Winter Boots, Ursula Black Leather

Having cold feet is the absolute worst, but thankfully Flattered has lots of really lovely shoes to keep your feet cozy and stylish all winter — whether you’re at home or on-the-go.

I’ve been spending a TON of time at home lately, so having a cozy and supportive pair of indoor slippers is a must, especially since my feet are always cold. I’ve been absolutely obsessed with these Lou Teddy slippers, and all of their fluffy cream goodness — there’s just something about them that makes me feel happy! But I must say, my feet are feeling really happy since I’ve been wearing them all day at home (instead of walking around in socks or flimsy slippers with no solid sole). The thick cork sole molds to your feet and is really comfortable and supportive. I was worried my toes might be cold since the style is like a sandal, but actually the open-toe just keeps your feet from getting sweaty inside since the wool-fleece is super warm.

For the times when I’m not at home, I needed a pair of all-weather boots to keep my feet well-insulated and dry. I opted for the Ursula boot in black cowhide leather, and the style is really casual and looks good with just about everything — they’re basically the “white-sneakers” of everyday winter boots. The inside is lined with a fuzzy wool-blend, and I love how cozy they keep my feet when I’m out-and-about. We’ve been bundling-up for lots of long winter strolls around our neighborhood, and these boots have of course become my go-to for any outing. The finger loops and elastic sides make them easy to pull on, and the Nylon sole makes them surprisingly light-weight compared to other winter boots.

All of Flattered’s styles are designed in Stockholm with a contemporary flair guided by Scandinavian sensibility, and hand-produced in Spain using long-lasting materials like leather, wool, and recycled cork. Each shoe is designed and crafted with the intention that it endures for many seasons, and Flattered gives equal precedence to longevity when it comes to both aesthetics and quality. If you’re on the lookout for a great everyday winter boot, there are several fabulous styles in their Autumn/Winter collection, and they also have quite a few options for indoor shoes and slippers too.

Arne Jacobsen Watches ~ Timepieces Infused With Danish Design History

    November 24, 2020
Arne Jacobsen Watches - RG Daily Blog

The story of each Arne Jacobsen Watch lives in the architectural legacy left behind by the iconic Danish designer. Throughout his career, Arne Jacobsen designed several clocks to accompany and complete the buildings he created — buildings like the SAS Royal Hotel, the Danish National Bank, and Aarhus City Hall.

Now, thanks to Arne Jacobsen Watches, these clocks have been wonderfully adapted into beautiful timepieces that bear all the hallmarks of Jacobsen’s work — modern simplicity met with exquisite functionality and timelessness. There are four unique watch-face styles to choose from, and each is an exact re-creation of an original Arne Jacobsen clock based on Jacobsen’s own sketches and plans.

Sven and I each have an Arne Jacobsen Watch and we both really love the clear aesthetics and the refinement of the materials. We both opted for styles with stainless-steel mesh bands, but there are several band-types to choose from and they are also interchangeable. The face-styles come in four different diameters, starting at 30 mm and going up to 46 mm. I really love the classic feeling of the clock Jacobsen designed for the Aarhus City Hall tower, so I opted for the Roman design. Sven wanted something even more simple, so he picked the minimalist City Hall design with black on black details.

If you’re curious to learn a bit more about the design history behind each of the four watches, you can explore a bit further on this page. And of course, you’ll find all their watch styles online, as well as wall clocks and table clocks — all of which would make great gifts for the upcoming holidays.

URBANARA ~ Berlin Pop-Up Store Visit

    November 18, 2020
    Urbanara Pop-Up Store Berlin

URBANARA, one of my favorite interiors and home textiles brands, has set-up shop in Berlin Mitte! The Pop-Up Store is open Monday-Saturday from now until mid-December, giving us Berliner’s the delightful chance to discover their products in person — wonderfully tactile home elements like rugs, bedding, blankets, and cushions.

Of course, URBANARA has an incredible universe of home textiles and interior accessories for you to discover online. But if you’re living in Berlin, I would definitely suggest paying a visit to their Mitte Pop-Up Store. Having a chance to browse through their products in person gives you a completely new perspective on the look and quality of everything they offer — from rugs to bedding.

I’ve been a long-time fan of URBANARA’s table and bedroom linens, but I’ve recently fallen in love with their carpet collection after seeing them in person at the Pop-Up Store. Currently, I have my eye on this swoon-worthy off-white Panchu Rug — the creamy wool-viskose blend is so incredibly soft, and I can’t get over the optics of the knobby looped texture (more photos below).

Shopping for rugs online can be a bit tricky since you can never truly get a full impression for the look and feel, so it’s nice to have a chance to see all the textures, fibers, and colors in person at the Pop-Up Store. But with that being said, I also doubt that you could ever go wrong ordering any rug from URBANARA online (in case you’re not in Berlin). I felt like a kid in a candy store during my visit, and had my hands on just about every beautiful rug sample there — I can confirm that all were wonderfully soft and with a great weighty quality.

URBANARA is also staunchly committed to ethical production, and takes great care to ensure that all of their rugs are woven without child-labor, exploitive pay, and dangerous working conditions. They work exclusively with weavers in India and Pakistan who meet the standards of Europe’s fair carpet trade initiative, Care & Fair. They also work with several other certifications (like Woolmark, GOTS, and OEKO Tex) to ensure that the quality of the materials their products are derived from meet the highest industry standards for safety, health, and quality.

If you’re not in the market for a carpet, there are lots of other really lovely URBANARA products to explore at the Pop-Up store — items like bedding, blankets, cushions, ceramics, candles and more. While I didn’t come home with a rug, I did end up finding a few new pieces to help cozy-up our flat for winter! I’ll show you all what I picked out soon in an upcoming post.

My Interior Favorites ~ Shop Our Home

    November 17, 2020
    Interior Design Inspo

If you’re on the lookout for new interior pieces and have spied something you like here on my blog or on my Instagram, you can finally scroll through my ‘Shop Our Home’ page.

Creating this page has been on my to-do list for months now, and I’ve finally gotten around to formatting an easy-to-browse list of linked products. I get a lot of questions on a regular basis like, “Where is that rug from?” – “Which Ikea doors are on your Pax wardrobe?” or “Where can I find good quality bedding?” So finally, I’ve put everything together in one place — making it easy for you guys to find all the things you love from our home!

Click Here To Shop Our Home

Some of the items are things we bought ourselves, and some of the items are products which were gifted by brands I work with. However, all of these products are pieces that I truly do love for their timelessness, quality, and functionality. I’ll keep this page updated as things change around our home, and will continue to add links to my favorite interior accessories like candles and design magazines too. For the pieces in our home that were sourced second-hand or vintage, I have included links to products that are very similar. Happy shopping, and always feel free to shoot me a PM or email if you have a question about a product.
